Goldendoodles are an amazing mixed breed dog, if you didn’t already know! If you are new to Goldendoodles, they are a cross breed between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle.
Goldendoodles come in different generations. The most popular generations include the F1, F1b, & F1bb Goldendoodles. These generations are “backcross” bred using a Goldendoodle with a Poodle. Backcrossing is when a hybrid breed (such as the Goldendoodle) is bred with the same breed as one of its parents (the Poodle).
Since the popular Goldendoodle generations include backcrossing with a Poodle, why aren’t there more Goldendoodles mixed with a Golden Retriever?
If you are looking for a Goldendoodle mixed with a Golden Retriever dog, they will be very hard to find. Let me explain below.
Can a Goldendoodle be Bred with a Golden Retriever?
The simple answer is, of course they can! A Goldendoodle and a Golden Retriever can be bred to make a Goldendoodle & Golden Retriever mixed breed.
A Goldendoodle mixed with a Golden Retriever is very uncommon, though. This is not because they wouldn’t be excellent dogs to have. It’s because they would increase the likelihood of shedding.
One of the main reasons the Goldendoodle has become so popular today is its low-shedding coat, provided through the Poodle’s genes. The low shedding coat of the Poodle mixed with a Golden Retrievers traits and characteristics are what make Goldendoodles unique.
That is why it is common for Goldendoodles to be “backcrossed” with Poodles instead of Golden Retrievers to get more of the low-shedding coat genes. These genes are highly sought after by everyone, from people with mild allergies to people who don’t want wads of hair on their floors.
Since the Goldendoodle and Golden Retriever mixed breed is so uncommon, let’s examine what appearances and characteristics this breed would have.
Goldendoodle and Golden Retriever Mixed Breed Appearance

For this article, when I mention Goldendoodle, I will refer to an F1 Goldendoodle. F1’s are the first generation of the Goldendoodle, with its parents being a purebred Golden Retriever and a purebred Poodle.
If a Goldendoodle were bred with a purebred Golden Retriever, the puppies would have around 75% Golden Retriever genes and 25% Poodle genes. This would mean their appearance would lean more towards looking like a Golden Retriever.
The Golden Retriever has a double coat with straight, medium-length hair. They typically come in colors of various shades of gold/yellow. They shed year-round, particularly in the spring and fall when their thick-out layer coat sheds off. They have an average height of 21-24 inches and are 55-80 pounds.
The Goldendoodle/Golden Retriever mixed breed would almost certainly have the same double coat with straight or wavy hair. The colors would reflect the Golden Retriever’s shades of gold/yellow. The chances of this Goldendoodle mixed breed having “furnishings” would be very small. Furnishings are the longer hairs on a Goldendoodle, giving them a scruffy-looking beard, mustache, and longer eyebrows. Giving a Goldendoodle the “teddy bear look.”
Physically, this Goldendoodle mixed breed would be larger than other Goldendoodle generations. This would be due to purebred Golden Retrievers typically being larger than the purebred Poodle.
The shedding of this Goldendoodle mixed breed would also be similar to the Golden Retriever. The low shedding coat of the Poodle would almost be lost. So shedding would occur frequently.
Ifyou wanted to breed a mini Goldendoodle with a Golden Retriever, the appearance would be the same as described above, just with a smaller size.
Goldendoodle and Golden Retriever Mixed Breed Characteristics
Since the characteristics of Golden Retrievers and Poodles are similar, the personality of a Goldendoodle/Golden Retriever mixed breed would not be completely different than a Goldendoodle’s personality.
TheGolden Retriever and the Poodle are intelligent, affectionate, friendly, and playful dog breeds. These traits get passed down to Goldendoodles and would pass down to a Goldendoodle & Golden Retriever mixed breed.
With a mixed breed consisting of a Goldendoodle and a Golden Retriever, the breed would take on more characteristics of a Golden Retriever. These include being very out-going, intelligent, trainable, and family-oriented
I have an F1bb Goldendoodle. This means that his parents were an F1b Goldendoodle and a Poodle. So my Goldendoodle is closer to being a Poodle than anything else. Compared to other F1 Goldendoodles, I have noticed two things with my Goldendoodle: his tendency to bark and his sensitivity.
Upon researching, I discovered that it is common in Poodles to be frequent barkers and their extra sensitivity. So a Goldendoodle mixed with a Golden Retriever might not be associated with these traits.
