There is a lot of false and misleading information about when the Goldendoodle originated. The exact date of the first Goldendoodle is not known. What is known is that the Goldendoodle mixed breed started gaining some popularity in the mid-late 1990s by a handful of breeders. The Goldendoodle was more than likely an idea that was spun off of the Labradoodle. Wally Cronan of Australia bred the first Labradoodle in 1989 to serve as a guide dog for a woman who was blind and had a husband allergic to dog hair. Wally went on to say that his creation of the Labradoodle opened a “pandora’s box” for breeders who wanted to capitalize on these new “designer breeds” who were low shedding and had the temperaments of other breeds. This more than likely spurred breeders to cross-breed the Golden Retriever and the Poodle since they were and are some of the most popular dog breeds in the world.
